‘Work –Life balance’ is a phrase which has entered our vocabulary over recent years; the idea that there is a perfect balance between work, family and leisure time. I believe having a healthy balance between work and other things makes for healthier, happier employees but I’m not sure that ‘work-life balance’ quite works for me. Let me explain ….
Work – life balance suggests work is somehow separate to the rest of our life, that it gets in the way and is something to be endured. This is certainly not my experience of work. For me it is interesting, rewarding, provides me with an opportunity to meet new people, to immerse myself in different perspectives and consider new ideas. But work, as with other areas of life, can also be pressurised and overwhelming.

But work, as with other areas of life, can also be pressurised and overwhelming.
So why, in these situations, do some people become sick whilst others appear to cope? Are we all like swans – gliding effortlessly on the surface whilst paddling away underneath? Or is something else going on? An important factor in this is personal wellbeing and resilience.
Employee wellbeing is emerging as an area for concern within organisations. Some companies have started to incorporate wellbeing targets into employees’ appraisals, making a link between wellbeing and performance. There is some evidence to support this. US firm, Horizons Workforce Consulting, found employees reporting higher levels of wellbeing performed better in every area. They had fewer health complaints, and, as a result, missed fewer workdays [1]. |
At SAVI Nutrition we don’t make a separation between work and the rest of someone’s life. We see the four cornerstones of wellbeing as nutrition, sleep, activity and relaxation. Working with people to make changes in these four areas can impact positively on all aspects of their life. Just as each individual is different and has different needs, so each organisation has its own culture and own unique situation. We can work with you to identify areas of your work environment where small changes can have an impact on wellbeing. We can also work with your employees to look at their lifestyle challenges and practical solutions to support wellbeing.
